Strides For The General celebrates 10 years of Hamilton hospital fundraising with virtual event

Runners can put their strides to good use this September when Hamilton Health Sciences Foundation launches the virtual edition of its popular Strides For The General event.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Strides For The General will be virtual and run Sept. 10 to 19. Ten days to celebrate 10 years of this important fundraising event. Participants are invited to run or walk any day or all 10 days.

“Proceeds from Strides For The General have always made a vital difference, but 2020 has placed new demands on the hospitals and community support is needed now more than ever,” says Milaina Wright of the Hamilton Health Sciences Foundation. “Over the last 10 years, Strides participants keep returning because they know it is a well-organized and fun event. This year, organizers plan to bring this same excitement to a virtual celebration.”

Starting in September, runners participating in Strides For The General will be able to enter their race times online. Prizes will be awarded to the fastest runners in each category. Organizers are also inviting walkers to take part in the STRIDES scavenger hunt by taking photos of letters they see on their route to spell “Strides,” and encouraging participants to share this photo collage on their social media channels to help promote this great cause.

Wright says, this year’s goal is to raise $150,000 in support of Hamilton General Hospital, the Regional Rehabilitation Centre and St. Peter’s Hospital. The event provides crucial funding to areas of the hospital infrastructure not covered by the government.

“Many people don’t realize the government does not fund hospital equipment, so Strides proceeds are absolutely vital to providing the dedicated medical teams with the equipment they need to care for patients,” says Wright. “Over the last nine years more than $1.2 million has been raised to purchase life-altering equipment. Items have included numerous specialized wheelchairs, ventilators, defibrillators, ultrasound machines, vital signs monitors and so much more.”

To honour frontline workers who have made a difference during the pandemic, Strides participants can nominate a frontline worker (from any industry) to be recognized on the hospital’s Wall of Thanks. Some nominees will even be profiled in event communications in honour of their exceptional commitment to making our community a better place.

Starting in September, runners participating in Strides For The General will be able to enter their race times online. Prizes will be awarded to the fastest runners in each category.

The first step is to register online at hamiltonhealth.ca/strides. There is a $20 registration fee. All registered participants receive a value-filled race kit that includes running socks, a face mask, a protein bar and much more.

"We are so excited to be able to hold Strides once again to celebrate our 10th anniversary," says Wright. "Although things are very different this year, the important work of our hospitals and frontline health care workers has never been more vital. So let's have some fun with the run while fundraising for a great cause."
