Canadian endurance runners ready to tackle UTMB as lottery results announced

UTMB Mont Blanc runs Aug. 24-30

As many endurance and trail runners checked out their social media feeds, they were likely greeted by dozens of fellow mountain trotters excitedly reporting their acceptance to the legendary UTMB Mont Blanc. The lottery results for the iconic French mountain trail running event are in, and many top Canadian racers made the grade and will compete this August.

The event itself actually includes seven races such as the premiere 170km UTMB race, as well as the 100km CCC, described as “a race deep into wilderness using for the most (part) the international path (of the) Grande Randonnée du Tour du Mont-Blanc.”

A whopping 47 Canadians will toe the line across all categories of the UTMB, the premier race of the event.

The 2020 edition includes familiar names such as American legend and defending UTMB women’s champion Courtney Dauwalter as well as fellow American Jim Walmsley lining up alongside defending champions Paul Capell of Spain and other international mountain runner sensations like Zimbabwe runner Emily Hawgood. Included in the list of elite “favourites” for UTMB are Canadian runners and siblings Elisabeth and Jean-Francois Cauchon.

For the CCC, up-and-coming Quebec runner Anne Champagne will make the big move and compete at the event for the first time. Champagne has had much success as of late including a big win at the 133km Trail du Bourbon race, which is part of the Grand Raid de la Réunion on Reunion Island, a French territory in the Indian Ocean.

Now, for the many who made it into the legendary race, and are starting a life-altering challenge in the face this morning, it is time to train and train hard.

Good luck!
