IOC announce Olympic Games moving to 2021

The International Olympic Committee has announced new dates for the 2021 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Japan.

The Olympic Games will be held July 23 to Aug. 8, 2021, with the Paralympic Games running Aug. 24 to Sept. 5. The dates are exactly one year from when the Games were to be held in 2020 before COVID-19.

“I want to thank the International Federations for their unanimous support and the Continental Associations of National Olympic Committees for the great partnership and their support in the consultation process over the last few days,” said IOC President Thomas Bach. “With this announcement, I am confident that, working together with the Tokyo 2020 Organising Committee, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, the Japanese Government, and all our stakeholders, we can master this unprecedented challenge. Humankind currently finds itself in a dark tunnel. These Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 can be a light at the end of this tunnel.”

In a previous announcement, the IOC stated that those who had already qualified for the Games would keep their qualification intact.

Canada was the first country to announce it would not be sending athletes to the Games as scheduled this year, followed closely by Australia. The following day, Dick Pound announced the Games would be postponed.

The Canadian Olympic Committee responded to the announcement with a statement that read, in part:

“The COC and CPC would like to thank President Thomas Bach, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and the Tokyo 2020 organizing committee for this decision which continues to show their commitment to safeguarding the health and safety of athletes and the world community.

We also renew our commitment to work with the IOC, International Paralympic Committee (IPC) and the Tokyo 2020 organizing committee and offer them our full support in helping navigate all the complexities that rescheduling the Games will bring.”
