Ottawa is getting a new Ironman Canada triathlon

Ottawa has been selected as the latest venue for the Ironman Canada triathlon, scheduled to commence on August 3, 2025. This announcement marks the introduction of the full-distance Ironman race to Ottawa, featuring a challenging course that will start at the historic Parliament Hill.

The event is part of the VinFast Ironman North America Series, and organizers are set to open general registration for participants on April 22, 2024. The Ironman Group and Ottawa Tourism are collaborating to bring this prestigious event to Ottawa, enhancing the city’s reputation as a destination for international sporting events.

The 2025 Ironman Canada-Ottawa triathlon will kick off with a 3.8km (2.4-mile) swim in the Ottawa River, starting from Britannia Beach and Park. Participants will then tackle a 180km bike course laid out in a 2.75 loop configuration, utilizing pathways closed off by the National Capital Commission specifically for the event. The race will conclude with a marathon run that traces back through the city’s downtown area, starting from the base of Parliament Hill and extending along the scenic Rideau Canal.

Michael Crockatt, President and CEO of Ottawa Tourism, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership with Ironman, highlighting the potential economic benefits and the opportunity to showcase Ottawa’s vibrant communities and landscapes. The event is expected to attract a wide audience, from local community members to international visitors, providing a boost to the local economy and sports tourism.

Tobi Nussbaum, CEO of the National Capital Commission, also welcomed the addition of the Ironman event to Ottawa’s summer calendar. He emphasized the city’s appeal during the summer months, with its mix of urban and natural attractions, including historic sites, parks, and waterways.

Ottawa presents a unique mix of urban culture and natural beauty, offering year-round outdoor activities. The city is framed by significant waterways such as the Ottawa River and Rideau Canal, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, providing a picturesque backdrop for the triathlon. In addition to summer sports, the region is known for its winter activities, including cross-country and downhill skiing, snowshoeing, and skating on the Rideau Canal Skateway, the world’s largest ice skating rink.

The 2025 Ironman Canada-Ottawa event will also serve as a qualifier for the 2026 VinFast Ironman World Championship, further enhancing its prestige and drawing competitive athletes aiming to secure their spot at the world championship event.
