New 100-Miler Coming with Fall Debut in Kananaskis

The Bow Valley Ultra (BVU) is gearing up to be an exciting new race in Canada. Set to debut on Sept. 27, this 100-mile trail race will wind through the rugged and beautiful Kananaskis region, with the start and finish in Canmore, Alberta. As the first ultra in the area to tackle the iconic 100-mile distance, the BVU is sure to be a challenging and scenic experience that will attract both seasoned ultra-runners and ambitious newcomers.

Scheduled during the fall shoulder season, the BVU aims to showcase the stunning autumnal beauty of the Bow Valley while offering a great opportunity to check out one of Alberta’s most pristine wilderness areas. The course will be an out-and-back route, taking runners across a variety of rugged terrain, maintained trails, and breathtaking vistas. With an estimated elevation gain of 4,000 to 6,000 metres, this race will demand endurance, technical skill, and the ability to navigate some very serious mountain landscapes.

To enter, runners must meet specific qualifications. The BVU is open only to those who have completed a minimum 50-mile trail race between Jan. 1, 2024, and Aug. 31, 2025. According to race organizers, Lewiston Ultra Events, the  qualifying race must be on at least 75 per cent natural, non-paved surfaces, and runners must submit proof of their race results during registration. Virtual events, FKTs, and unpermitted races will not be accepted.

In addition to the race qualification, BVU participants are being asked to complete at least eight hours of trail work in the year leading up to the event.

Runners will have 30 hours to complete the race, with generous cutoff times at various points to ensure safety. Mid-race checkpoints will allow for fuelling, rest, and support, with a pacer allowed to join runners at the halfway point or at 10 p.m. on race day. The pacer must stay behind their runner and can only exit the course at the next aid station if they lose visual contact. Only one pacer is allowed per runner at any time, and pacers must follow all event rules to ensure fairness and safety.

With a demanding course, community-focused vibe, and incredible mountain terrain, the BVU is a race that could bring in top-level competitors and newcomers alike, all eager to take on the challenge of Kananaskis.
