Race director and founder Dione Mason says the run is heading into its seventh edition.
“I can't believe it's been seven years already, “ she says. “It’s the second time in person since the pandemic. So it's quite exciting to be back in person once again.”

This Caribbean-inspired run is scheduled for July 29 at Sir Casimir Gzowski Park on the Martin Goodman Trail along the waterfront in Toronto and features breathtaking views of Lake Ontario and a fantastic race atmosphere.
The event is open to runners of all levels, from beginners to seasoned athletes, and includes distances of 5K and 10K as well as a 1K kid’s race.

“Running is freedom,” says Mason. And that’s why she wanted to create a race to celebrate her cultural roots that align with Carnival in the Caribbean. One that celebrates freedom. She did just that when she founded the Toronto Carnival Run in 2016.
“Running is much like that — freedom,” she says. “The freedom to move at your own pace and level of accessibility without judgment. Running/walking is also the most accessible form of exercise. Therefore, it made sense to marry these two concepts together.”
As a fitness and lifestyle coach as well as a runner from a Caribbean background, Mason didn’t see a lot of diversity when it came to those participating in the sport. And she wanted to change that.
“I was just thinking, what can I possibly do to encourage more diverse people to get involved with running, walking, and just being active?” she says. “ I actually was on a run one day scratching my head trying to figure it out, and I just thought, wait a minute, I’m doing it. Let’s create a run.”
The Toronto Carnival Run was created as Canada's only accredited Caribbean-inspired run that was founded and directed by Mason — Canada's only Black female race director.
“Running and walking are the most accessible types of physical activity, in my opinion,” Mason says. “People don't have to be the fastest or the most glamorous when they're doing it, as long as they're moving forward in some capacity. That is sort of what was the inspiration. It's really just about getting more diversity, and really helping people to see the mind-body connection between moving their body and being able to be effective in their lives."

”I do strive to really make people feel welcome,” Mason says. “So as soon as you arrive, you're going to hear music, you're going to have that sort of feeling like you're in the Caribbean. The post-race food is more than just a banana. We actually do have a full breakfast that's inspired by the Caribbean.”
