Fernie stands out as one of Canada’s premier ski towns, showcasing its charm and historical significance against the breathtaking backdrop of the Lizard Range in the Canadian Rockies of southeastern British Columbia. Renowned for its exceptional powder skiing, Fernie is more than just a winter wonderland; it boasts a distinctive atmosphere, friendly locals, and an authentic spirit that defies description and demands firsthand experience.
This hidden gem, with a population just surpassing 5,000, remains a well-kept secret among ski enthusiasts. While its Historic Downtown and top-tier mountain resort contribute to its allure, Fernie’s true essence lies in its creative community. Here, individuals warmly greet passersby on the streets, culinary artisans craft exquisite dishes and beers, and an eclectic arts scene thrives.
Troy Nixon, a dedicated mountain biker and Fernie city councillor, discovered the town’s appeal in 2010 and made it his permanent home in 2014. He emphasizes the town’s proximity to recreation and a welcoming community, stating, “We are eight minutes to the ski hill in the winter, and in the summer, we can ride right from our door. Really, we don’t need a bike rack.”
Established in 1904 along the Elk River, Fernie’s roots as a coal-mining town are reflected in its well-preserved brick and stone buildings, now housing an array of shops, restaurants, and cafes. Nixon finds it challenging to pick a favorite among the town’s dining establishments, praising the excellent pubs, diverse cuisine options, and vibrant food scene.
Fernie also boasts a lively arts and entertainment scene, with live music and the Brickhouse’s jam night serving as a breeding ground for bands like Shred Kelly. Locals like Megan Lohman appreciate the town’s supportive atmosphere, celebrating the success of small businesses, entrepreneurs, and committed volunteers.
While Fernie shines year-round, it truly comes to life in the great outdoors. A haven for outdoor enthusiasts, the town offers world-class mountain biking, hiking, fly fishing, golf, and paddling in the summer, while winter brings epic cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and fat biking.
However, Fernie’s pièce de résistance is its exceptional skiing experience, encompassing powder skiing, catskiing, tree skiing, and the legendary Griz. Celebrated during Griz Days every March, this mythical figure, half-man and half-bear, is credited with bringing the abundant powder snow that defines Fernie. Fernie Alpine Resort, just five kilometers from town, serves as the epicenter of the renowned “Powder Highway,” featuring 142 runs, 10 lifts, five alpine bowls, and unparalleled tree skiing.
Beyond the resort, adventurous souls can explore a thousand acres of terrain through cat skiing at destinations like Island Lake Lodge and Fernie Wilderness Adventures. Visitors may initially be drawn to Fernie for its snow and natural beauty, but they inevitably fall in love with the town itself – a truly special place where outdoor adventure meets a warm and welcoming community.
