Here are Just 10 Reasons We Love the Canada Army Run

As the leaves begin to change and the crisp air of autumn fills the streets, Ottawa is set to host one of the most anticipated events of the year: Canada Army Run. Scheduled for Sept. 22, this event offers participants the chance to run, walk, or roll alongside members of the Canadian Army through Ottawa’s most iconic landmarks. Here’s why we love this incredible event:

1. Run for Those Who Serve

The Canada Army Run offers a chance to show gratitude to the brave men and women of the Canadian Armed Forces. The event builds a powerful connection between participants and those who serve, making every kilometer meaningful.

2. Incredible Ottawa Scenery

Ottawa’s iconic landmarks provide the perfect backdrop for this inspiring race. The route takes runners past historic locations like Parliament Hill and the National War Memorial, blending patriotism with breathtaking scenery.

3. Military Tradition from Start to Finish

From the ceremonial cannon blast to start the race to receiving dog tag medals from active service members at the finish line, every detail is steeped in military tradition. It’s an unforgettable experience for participants of all abilities.

4. Inclusive for All Abilities

Whether you’re running, walking, rolling, or using adaptive devices, the Canada Army Run welcomes participants of all fitness levels. There are categories for wheelchair athletes and hand cyclists, making the race accessible and inclusive.

5. Virtual Races for Global Participants

The virtual race option, available from Sept. 6 to 27, lets participants join from anywhere in the world. You can complete the race at your own pace on your own route, making it easier than ever to be part of this important event.

6. Support for Injured Soldiers

Funds raised from the event benefit Soldier On and Support Our Troops, charitable causes that help ill and injured military members, veterans and their families. Canada Army Run gives back by supporting recovery programs for those who have sacrificed for the country, providing scholarships for children of military members and much more.

Over the years, Canada Army Run has raised more than $4.7 million to support military families. This year, participants can start their own fundraising campaigns to further contribute to the lives of service members and their families, and anyone who raises $20 or more will receive a special yellow fundraiser bib – and extra cheers and high fives for their efforts.

7. Camaraderie Like No Other

The energy and unity among participants are unmatched. Whether you’re a veteran, active service member, or civilian, running shoulder to shoulder fosters a sense of pride and respect, making it a truly unique experience.

8.Unique Challenges

Canada Army Run offers an opportunity to really test your limits and reach new goals with two unique multi-distance challenges – the Sergeant Major’s Challenge and the Commander’s Challenge.

At the in-person race, anyone taking on the Sergeant Major’s Challenge will run, walk or roll the 5K and then complete the 10K immediately afterwards. After crossing two finish lines and receiving two dog tag finisher medals, they will receive a Sergeant Major’s Challenge Coin.

In-person participants who choose the Commander’s Challenge will cross the 5K finish line and earn a 5K dog tag finisher’s medal before heading back to the Start Line for the Half Marathon. After crossing the Half Marathon and completing a total of 26.1 kilometres in one day, finishers will earn a Commander’s Challenge Coin.

Virtual participants can also take part in the Sergeant Major’s Challenge and Commander’s Challenge, with Commander’s Challenge participants getting a chance to race all three individual distances – the 5K, 10K and Half Marathon.

Challenge Coins are a very significant aspect of military culture, and Canada Army Run puts a unique spin on this tradition with its unique multi-distance races.

9. More Than Just a Race

While Sunday’s races are the main event, there is so much more going on in and around Cartier Square Drill Hall during Canada Army Run race weekend. Inside Cartier Drill Hall, you can meet the event’s sponsors and partners in the Expo on Sept. 20 and 21, while outside, near the Drill Hall and in Marion Dewar Park, you’ll find a variety of military vehicle and equipment displays and get to meet serving military members, offering a glimpse into the world of the Canadian Armed Forces. These impressive displays add an exciting, one-of-a-kind element to the event.

Bringing the whole family downtown? Make sure to check out the BMO Kids Zone on Sept. 21 and 22. There will be inflatables, face painting, games and more to keep younger participants and cheering squads entertained.

10. Best. Finish. Ever.

Perhaps one of the most emotional moments comes when participants pass through Victory Row, where injured military members stand to cheer on runners. It’s a powerful reminder of the resilience and strength of those who’ve served.

From the iconic dog tag finisher’s medal to special Canada Army Run gear, participants take home keepsakes that commemorate their achievement and remind them of the event’s deeper purpose.

After crossing the finish line, participants can enjoy the festive atmosphere with live music, military demonstrations, and plenty of food. It’s the perfect way to relax, reflect, and celebrate the accomplishment with fellow runners and soldiers.

Whether you’re attending the in-person race on Sept. 22 or opting for the flexibility of the virtual option, the Canada Army Run is much more than a race—it’s a powerful celebration of community, patriotism, and resilience. From the stunning Ottawa landmarks to the military tradition woven into every aspect of the event, it’s an unforgettable experience that leaves a lasting impact on participants and spectators alike.
