New Canadian Canoe Museum Opens its Doors to a World-Class Facility

In a momentous occasion set to redefine cultural and recreational tourism in Peterborough, the Canadian Canoe Museum (CCM) is unveiling its grand new home. Nestled on a picturesque five-acre lakefront campus on Ashburnham Drive, the museum’s magnificent two-storey, 65,000-square-foot edifice stands as a beacon of craftsmanship and cultural heritage.

Amidst the breathtaking vistas of Little Lake, surrounded by lush public parks and linked to the Trans Canada Trail, the museum’s new site pays homage to the Traditional Territory of the Williams Treaties First Nations.

“The Canadian Canoe Museum collection is unlike any other and has been recognized for its national significance to Canada,” said Kevin Malone, chair of the board of directors. “Now, it finally has a befitting, purpose-built home that enables it to be displayed in its entirety and meaningfully cared for as a fundamental part of Canada’s past.”

Designed by Unity Design Studio, the architecture seamlessly blends with the natural elements, drawing inspiration from the rich history of canoe craftsmanship. The museum’s inauguration coincides with its recognition on National Geographic’s esteemed “Best of the World 2024” list, solidifying its status as a premier cultural destination.

At a cost of $45 million, the fully-funded project encompasses the construction of a state-of-the-art facility that meets Class “A” controlled museum environment artifact conservation standards. This expansive space allows for the display of the museum’s vast collection of more than 600 watercraft, inviting visitors to delve into immersive exhibits and dynamic on-land and on-water experiences.

Beyond its role as a cultural hub, the Canadian Canoe Museum is poised to become a focal point for outdoor enthusiasts and travelers. With features like the integrated Collection Hall, Exhibition Hall, Artisan Studio, and premier event spaces, the museum promises a wealth of experiences for visitors of all ages.

As the doors swing open to the public, the Canadian Canoe Museum stands ready to embark on a new journey, inviting guests to explore the rich tapestry of Canada’s canoeing heritage in a world-class setting.
