New Ontario running event will raise funds to aid humanitarian crisis in Ukraine

VR Pro team will host event at Bronte Creek Provincial Park

We’ve all watched the horror unfolding in Ukraine during the Russian invasion, and felt helpless. One race company, VR Pro, is doing something about it by organizing an event to raise funds for the Canadian Red Cross to support its work during the Ukraine humanitarian crisis.

The Bronte Creek 5K & 10K Run / Walk For Ukraine is scheduled for May 29.

“We have been planning a race in Bronte Creek since November of last year. With all of the recent events unfolding we wanted to do something to support the people in Ukraine so we decided to turn this event into a fundraising initiative so that we can support those who are directly affected by the war,” says VR Pro’s Jessica Brake. “We started raising funds at a recent race kit pickup and raised over $2,000 in one weekend. With the addition of this race we have now raised over $3,700.”

Vr Pro is the team behind many popular Ontario races including the Chilly Half Marathon and the Frosty 5K.

According to VR Pro, the events are open to runners and walkers of all abilities, and we encourage everyone who registers for the event to fundraise. And there will be prizes for the top three fundraisers including a top prize of a 2022 Race Series Pass. Anyone who donates $25 or more will receive a Cool Max running hat or running shirt.

The race route will see participants make their way through the beautiful trails of Bronte Creek Provincial Park. The 5KM race will complete one loop of the park and the 10KM race will complete two loops of the park.

Brake says, the response to the race has been fantastic, and donations are already flowing to the Red Cross.

“We have had people register and set aggressive fundraising goals for themselves. We raised $1,000 within the first 2 days of announcing the event,” she says.

“I think it is important to note that although the run/walk itself will not be taking place until the end of May, the funds that are being raised are being sent to the Canadian Red Cross Ukraine Humanitarian Crisis Appeal on a weekly basis.”

As always, the VR Pro team continues to work towards fostering a sense of community. The team’s Facebook group for runners has provided an opportunity to connect with each, share accomplishments and challenges.
