The original Santa Race is back for a fun and festival race filled with holiday cheer

Looking for the perfect way to kick off the holiday season while enjoying a scenic and social run? Then the annual Santa Race is just the thing. The original Hamilton Santa Race kicks off on Dec. 11 at the Hamilton Yacht Club with all participants dressed in special Santa running suits. It doesn’t get any more festive than that.
“This race is Canada's Original All-Santa Race!” says Jessica Brake, a race director for VR Pro Races. “Everyone who participates in the race is required to dress in a Santa Suit, so all you see during the event is a sea of Santas. You don't have to run to participate in this event. This is a fun and family-friendly event that is open to everyone.”
Santa suits are included in the race kits. In addition to the Hamilton event, the Niagara-on-the-Lake Santa and Elf Run is scheduled for Dec. 18.
This year, Brake says, the team has added a new 10-km option to the Hamilton race for those wanting a little more of a challenge.
“Historically this race has only had a 5KM event, so we are excited to add a new distance to the lineup,” Brake adds.
Expectations are that about 800 Santas will take to the starting line in Hamilton with another 500 Santas at the race in Niagara-on-the-Lake, which happens a week later.
The Hamilton race route is a stunning out-and-back course along the city’s waterfront trails.
“It is completely paved and flat,” Brake says. “The NOTL Route goes through the scenic Niagara Parkway Recreation Trail and follows behind Fort George.”
And, of course, it wouldn’t be a festive event without a little holiday cheer.
“Everyone is invited to stay after the race and enjoy a complimentary hot breakfast inside the yacht club,” Brake says. “We will be serving croissants, vegetarian and meat breakfast sausages, hot chocolate, coffee and more. The yacht club will also be setting up their outdoor fire pits so runners can relax and enjoy their breakfasts by the fire.”
This race is great for groups or families who want to celebrate the holiday season in a fun way together. The Niagara-on-the-Lake race is a great reason for a weekend getaway in NOTL.
This year’s events will also have a charitable component. VR Pro will be raising funds for Hamilton Food Share and collecting food donations at the race.
