Nestled in the heart of Ontario’s cottage country, Muskoka is more than just a vacation spot for many—it’s a lifestyle. For Lauren and Nicole Peters, this idyllic setting was the backdrop of their childhood, a place where they discovered their love for the outdoors, from water skiing to wakeboarding. Known for their recent stint on The Amazing Race Canada and a budding career in the entertainment industry, the Peters sisters have always had their roots firmly planted in Muskoka’s sandy shores and pristine lakes.
Muskoka Memories and Water Adventures
When asked about their summers in Muskoka, Lauren and Nicole can’t help but beam. “Everything about Muskoka just exudes this energy,” Lauren shared. “One time someone told me, ‘No one does summer like Canada,’ and it’s so true. Especially in Muskoka, it’s the quintessential Canadian summer.” The sisters speak of their early days, surrounded by family and friends, exploring the lakes and taking on new challenges.
Their passion for water sports began early. “Our first summer job was working at an ice cream shop. Then we worked as servers, but we always had our eyes set on the ski shows in Bala,” Nicole recalls. The sisters honed their skills behind their family boat, performing tricks like standing on each other’s shoulders. Their dedication paid off, landing them spots in ski shows and eventually making the roster for Team Canada in show skiing.
Performing in ski shows became a significant part of their Muskoka experience. “There’s such a sense of team when you’re all out there on the water, trying to nail that perfect trick,” Nicole explained. The thrill of performing, coupled with the beauty of the Muskoka lakes, creates an exhilarating blend of athleticism and artistry.
The Amazing Race Canada: A Natural Fit
Their competitive spirit and knack for adventure found a new outlet in The Amazing Race Canada. “We grew up watching the show with our grandparents. When the opportunity came up, it felt like a natural fit. We love adventure and never shy away from a challenge,” Lauren shared. The sisters’ diverse skill set—from their acting chops to their athletic abilities—made them strong contenders.
Their journey on the show was marked by determination and grit. “Even if we’re not the most prepared or skilled, we won’t give up. We’ll find a way to make it happen,” Nicole said with a smile. This attitude carried them through various challenges, including the notorious “gross-out” food challenge featuring a choice of pig brain or testicles, which they approached with their characteristic humour and resolve.
A Passion for Water Sports
Water skiing and wakeboarding remain at the core of the sisters’ athletic pursuits. “Training is a mix of muscle memory and practice. It’s like riding a bike—you don’t forget. We’ve been skiing since we were three,” Lauren explained. Even while living in Los Angeles, they find ways to stay connected to their water roots, whether surfing in the ocean or participating in dry land training.
For those looking to dive into water sports, the sisters offer some sage advice: “It takes practice. You’re going to fall—a lot. But that’s how you get better. Start with having fun, and the skills will follow.” Their own journey is a testament to the rewards of persistence and passion.
Muskoka’s Hidden Gems
Beyond the adrenaline-fueled adventures, the sisters cherish the quiet moments in Muskoka. “Our favourite spots? Definitely Bala and Windsor Park, where we’ve done some memorable ski shows,” Nicole noted. They also have a special place in their hearts for Cleveland’s House, a historic spot that once hosted their water ski performances, where they also worked.
Their family cottages, nestled on Gibson Lake and Sunny Lake, are sanctuaries where they unwind and recharge. “Muskoka is more than just a place; it’s a feeling, a community,” Nicole added. “Every summer, it feels like coming home.”
The Future Beckons
As the Peters sisters continue to navigate their careers and adventures, they carry the spirit of Muskoka with them. Whether it’s braving the challenges of The Amazing Race Canada or starring in a movie, they remain grounded in the values and experiences that shaped them.
“We’ve learned so much about ourselves through these experiences—our resilience, our ability to adapt and thrive,” Lauren said. “Muskoka taught us to embrace every opportunity, to live fully and fearlessly.”
With their sights set on new horizons and a deep appreciation for their roots, Lauren and Nicole Peters are an embodiment of the Muskoka spirit—adventurous, resilient, and always ready for the next challenge.
