Beloved Oakville running event returns with the Nutrience Oakville 21.1 Half Marathon, 10km & 5km

If you’re looking for an exciting way to embrace the beauty of fall in Ontario, the Nutrience Oakville 21.1 Half Marathon, 10km, and 5km races are just around the corner, happening on Sunday, Sept. 29. Whether you’re a seasoned runner aiming for a new personal best or just looking for a fun, active day out with friends and family, this event has something for everyone. And the best part? It’s set against the stunning backdrop of Oakville’s lakeshore.

Filling the Gap: A Race for Oakville

The Nutrience Oakville 21.1 is not just another race; it’s a community-driven event that brings together the town of Oakville and runners from across Ontario.

“Oakville runners were missing having their own half-marathon, so we stepped in to fill that gap,” says Sandie Orlando, co-race director from Endurance Event Productions. This sentiment echoes the enthusiasm and support from the local community, businesses, and sponsors who have rallied to make this event a reality.

Endurance Event Productions is the team behind the wildly popular and wonderfully organised Georgina Marathon and the Spring Fling.

With Nutrience stepping in as the title sponsor, the event is set to be a highlight in the local running calendar. Orlando adds, “The timing makes it perfect as a pre-marathon tune-up or post-marathon ‘leverage your fitness’ event.” This flexibility makes the race an attractive option for runners gearing up for larger races or looking to capitalize on their post-marathon conditioning.

A Course to Remember

The Nutrience Oakville 21.1 offers three race distances: a half marathon (21.1km), a 10km, and a 5km. Each course is designed to showcase the best of Oakville’s natural beauty and urban charm. The races start at Shell Park, a lush slice of green that serves as the perfect launching point for the day’s adventure.

The courses run along Lakeshore Road, offering stunning views of Lake Ontario. The half marathon route, in particular, takes runners through the serene Tannery Park, providing a unique blend of waterfront and wooded scenery. The 10km and 5km routes loop back towards Shell Park, ensuring that all participants, regardless of distance, get to enjoy the beauty of Oakville’s lakeshore.

While the course is mostly flat, runners can expect a few gentle rollers that add a touch of challenge without being overwhelming. The race director notes, “There are some short rollers along the way, and a beautiful view of the city across the Lake,” highlighting the course’s appeal for both experienced runners and newcomers alike.

A Festive and Supportive Atmosphere

One of the key elements that sets the Nutrience Oakville 21.1 apart is its vibrant and welcoming atmosphere.

“We plan on making the expo and race day event as friendly and welcoming as possible,” says co-race director Cindy Lewis-Caballero. This includes an expo on the day before the race, where participants can pick up their race kits and explore exhibits from sponsors and local businesses.

On race day, the community spirit shines through. Local running groups are encouraged to set up tents and cheer on their members, creating a festive and supportive environment. Many sponsors are also involved, hosting aid and cheer stations along the course. These stations are not just functional; they’re designed to be lively and engaging, offering runners encouragement and refreshments every few kilometers.

Giving Back: Running for a Cause

The Nutrience Oakville 21.1 is not only about running; it’s also about making a difference. The event supports several local causes, including the Oakville Fare Share Food Bank, Oakville Hospital Foundation, and Lymphoma Canada. With a fundraising goal of $15,000, the race provides an opportunity for participants and supporters to contribute to these important causes. So far, the event has raised over $6,220.05, with more donations expected as race day approaches.

Plan Your Race Day Experience

To ensure a smooth and enjoyable race day experience, participants can pick up their race kits ahead of time. An early kit pick-up is available on Tuesday, September 24th, from 4 PM to 7 PM at Culture Athletics in Toronto. For those in Oakville, the Race Expo on Saturday, September 28th, from 11 AM to 5 PM, offers another opportunity to get your gear and soak in the pre-race excitement.

For participants picking up kits on race day, a VIP pick-up package is available to streamline the process. The race director advises that if you’re picking up for a group, it’s best to contact the organizers in advance to ensure everything is ready for you.
