Racing, Rhythms, and Riverside Revelry: The Tim Hortons Ottawa Dragon Boat Festival

Paddles up. It is dragon boat season, and for many the highlight is the annual Tim Hortons Ottawa Dragon Boat Festival.

In the heart of Ottawa, where the currents of the Rideau River converge with the pulse of the city, lies Mooney’s Bay Park—a vibrant tapestry of greenery, water, and community spirit. Every year, as the sun reaches its zenith and the air fills with the promise of summer, this picturesque locale transforms into the epicentre of one of North America’s most exhilarating celebrations of sport, music, and camaraderie—the Tim Hortons Ottawa Dragon Boat Festival.

This year’s festival is scheduled for June 21-23 and registration is now open.

Paddling Towards Glory

For paddlers and spectators alike, the dragon boat races are the heart of this renowned festival—an awesome display of strength, teamwork, and sheer determination.

At the helm of the event are teams hailing from every corner of the continent and beyond each vying for victory in a series of fiercely contested races. Mixed, women’s, and open divisions showcase the diverse talents of paddlers of all ages and backgrounds, while special categories such as the All Cancer Paddlers Cup and the Accessibility Challenge Cup shine a spotlight on the power of inclusivity and resilience.

No wonder people flock from across the country and around the world to participate in Ottawa.

“The festival attracts teams from around the world and has hosted participants from the United States and parts of Europe and Asia,” Cooper adds.

To date, a whopping 115 teams have registered including 65 mixed — teams that are a mix of male and female paddlers, and 29 women — teams that are made up of all female paddlers, and 21 open — teams with no specific gender requirements.

A Dragon Boat Festival of Music and Merriment

But while the races may take centre stage, the festival’s allure extends far beyond the water’s edge. As the sun dips low on the horizon, Mooney’s Bay Park comes alive with the infectious rhythms and melodies of the festival’s free concerts, presented by Scotiabank.

Friday night sets the stage for a musical extravaganza, with JUNO Award-nominated Rare Americans leading the charge. With their inventive storytelling and chart-topping hits, the band promises to ignite the stage and captivate audiences with their unique blend of music and animation.

Saturday sees The Blue Stones take the spotlight, bringing their impossibly massive sound and electrifying live show to the eager crowds gathered at Mooney’s Bay. Joined by an eclectic lineup of Canadian talent—including NOBRO, The Hallions, Luella, High Waters, Dan Kelly, and Emma Lamontagne—each performance is a testament to the rich tapestry of talent that calls Canada home.

A Dragon Boat Festival for the Senses

As the music fills the air and the cheers of the crowd mingle with the sounds of the river, festival-goers are invited to indulge in a feast for the senses. From tantalizing treats served up by local food trucks to refreshing beverages from Beyond The Pale and Side Hustle Sodas, there’s no shortage of culinary delights to savour.

And for those seeking a moment of respite amidst the excitement, the festival’s exhibitors offer a diverse array of wares, from handmade crafts to unique souvenirs, providing the perfect opportunity to browse, shop, and support local artisans.

Celebrating Community and Connection

But perhaps the most magical aspect of the Tim Hortons Ottawa Dragon Boat Festival is the sense of community and connection that permeates every aspect of the event. From the seasoned paddlers competing for glory to the first-time participants taking to the water for the very first time, each individual plays a vital role in the tapestry of stories that unfold against the backdrop of Mooney’s Bay.

In addition to the serious and fun competition, Cooper says part of the draw and lasting appeal of the event is the social component.

“It is a very social sport with crews ranging from all ages and skill levels,” Cooper says.

So whether you’re a seasoned paddler, a music aficionado, or simply looking for an unforgettable weekend of adventure, make your way to Mooney’s Bay Park from June 21-23 and experience the magic of the Tim Hortons Ottawa Dragon Boat Festival for yourself. It’s a celebration unlike any other—one that promises thrills, laughter, and memories to last a lifetime.
