The 2025 Toronto Marathon: Everything You Need to Know About the City’s Biggest Running Event

The 2025 Toronto Marathon is one of the premiere running events in the country attended by thousands of eager participants looking to clock fast times and enjoy an iconic race in Canada’s largest city. It’s downhill. It’s scenic. And it’s fast. And this year’s event is scheduled for May 4 with full marathon, half-marathon, 10K and 5K run and walk categories.

From elite athletes chasing record times to first-time marathoners determined to complete the distance, the Toronto Marathon is more than just a race; it’s a journey of perseverance and personal triumph that winds through some of the city’s most spectacular neighbourhoods and scenic routes.

Many people site the scenery as one of the main reasons for choosing the Toronto Marathon, as runners can take in scenes like Casa Loma and other iconic tourist spots in addition to participating in a fantastic event.

Last year, there were logistical challenges, which race director Jay Glassman acknowledges, and has worked hard alongside the City of Toronto and Toronto Police Service to ensure a well-run event without hiccups this time around.

“We want every runner to have an unforgettable experience, whether they’re chasing a personal best or simply soaking in the energy of race day,” Glassman says.

Runners will notice changes at the finish area, including a longer walk to the Queen Elizabeth Building for post-race food and a slight course adjustment at Bayview, where a newly accessible park is now incorporated. Additionally, the race has moved kit pickup from Exhibition Place to the Sheraton Centre in downtown Toronto, making it more accessible via subway and extending the pickup period from a day and a half to four days.

And, of course, it wouldn’t be a Toronto Marathon without the world-renowned Psyching Team that was founded by the late Dr. Kate Hays. The team of 30–35 sports psychologists helps runners conquer both physical and mental challenges, embodying the “mind over marathon” philosophy. This initiative has been crucial to the Toronto Marathon’s success and has gained global recognition, inspiring other races to adopt similar programs.

As the 2025 Toronto Marathon prepares for its May 4 edition, Glassman and his team remain focused on enhancing the participant experience. Beyond the race, the event serves as a powerful fundraising platform for a dozen charities, partnering with the likes of Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation, Canadian Cancer Society, SickKids, and the Canadian Mental Health Association to name just a few of the vital causes. At the finish line, a dedicated team of volunteers ensures a smooth experience, backed by an outstanding emergency medical team.

The magic of marathon day isn’t confined to the course itself—it’s in the roaring cheers that echo through city streets, the unwavering support from volunteers handing out water and encouragement, and the camaraderie among runners who share nods of determination at the start line. It’s in the quiet moments of self-reflection during early morning training runs and the powerful surge of adrenaline when you hear your name being called in those final, triumphant strides to the finish.

Toronto itself plays a starring role in this race, offering a scenic backdrop that takes runners through a vibrant urban landscape, past historic landmarks, and through the city’s charming neighbourhoods. The course brings new challenges, but the heart of the race remains the same—pushing limits, embracing the journey, and coming together.
