On a crisp September morning in Canmore, Alberta, the sun rises slowly over the towering silhouettes of the Three Sisters, casting golden light onto forest trails and sparkling alpine streams. In Centennial Park, the heart of town, hundreds of runners are set to gather at the start line drawn here by the same pull: the magic of the mountains and the promise of a very special race.
Welcome to the 2025 Canmore Rocky Mountain Half Marathon, 10K & 5K—a must-do event for runners, walkers, and nature lovers alike. Now in its 29th year, this annual celebration of endurance and community is more than just a race; it’s a journey into the wild beauty of the Rockies, a fundraiser for global education, and a joyful gathering in one of Canada’s most picturesque towns.
And this year, the event returns on Sunday, Sept. 7, bigger and better than ever.
A Race for Every Runner
The Canmore Rocky Mountain race series offers three distances—each one thoughtfully designed to showcase the best of the region’s landscapes, from glacial rivers to wooded paths, and always framed by the soaring peaks that make this part of Alberta so iconic.

For those craving a long-distance adventure, the half marathon is a rugged yet accessible 21.1-kilometre route that winds through forests, along mountain streams, and even cuts through a historic mining site. The course features a modest elevation change of 70 metres, with a gradual incline in the first half and a satisfying downhill cruise to the finish. With five water stations and well-maintained trails (a mix of asphalt and fine gravel), this race welcomes both experienced runners and strong walkers, though participants must finish within three hours due to course restrictions.
The 10K option is no less stunning. Beginning in the heart of downtown Canmore, this route quickly opens up to expansive views along the Bow River. Flat and fast, the course is ideal for beginners aiming to complete their first race, as well as experienced runners chasing a personal best. The trail is smooth, the vibe is relaxed, and the Rockies never stop showing off.
And for those looking for something shorter, the 5K offers a perfect blend of ease and energy. Also set against the gorgeous backdrop of Canmore’s townsite, this route is entirely flat and accessible to runners and walkers of all abilities. Whether you’re a first-timer or just out for a scenic sprint, it’s hard not to be inspired by your surroundings.
A Community on the Move
One of the most heartwarming elements of race day is how inclusive it is—right down to the youngest runners. The Kids Race, held at 11 a.m. at Centennial Park’s running track, invites children ages three to eight to take part in the festivities. The little ones run laps, receive medals, and learn early on that running is about joy, not just speed. Parents cheer from the sidelines, and the laughter is just as loud as the applause.

While the physical challenge draws many to this event, the real heartbeat of the race lies in its mission. The race supports the Embrace International Foundation, a charity working to improve access to education for children in underserved communities around the world. The event hopes to raise $30,000 this year, and every registration, every donation, and every step taken on race day brings that goal closer to reality.
There’s something deeply fulfilling about crossing a finish line knowing your race meant something more. That’s the spirit of Canmore.
A Race Experience That’s Worth the Trip
The Canmore Half isn’t just about the course—it’s about the entire experience. From the moment you register, you’re welcomed into a well-organized, runner-focused event that’s as professional as it is warm. Race packages are available starting Thursday, September 4, and all finishers receive a one-of-a-kind locally made wooden medal—a handcrafted keepsake that reflects the artisanal soul of Canmore.
With start times staggered across the morning (8:30 a.m. for the half marathon, 9:00 a.m. for the 10K, and 9:15 a.m. for the 5K), there’s plenty of room on the course and plenty of time afterward to explore the town. And you’ll want to. Canmore is a gem—offering cozy cafés, hiking trails, and jaw-dropping scenery in every direction.
