In the vast landscape of cycling events, where adrenaline and competition often take centre stage, there lies a hidden gem that offers a different kind of experience — the Gran Fondo PEI, scheduled for Aug. 23-25. Nestled in the breathtaking countryside and coastal beauty of Prince Edward Island, this event beckons cyclists from all corners with promises of scenic routes, culinary delights, and a sense of camaraderie like no other.

Taking place over three days, participants have the option to indulge in a trio of rides that showcase the best of PEI’s natural splendor. From coastal views to rolling hills, each route is meticulously designed to offer a perfect balance of challenge and enjoyment.

“We have designed the routes to showcase the best of PEI, including all the coastal views, beaches, and farmlands,” says event director Amir Zuccolo.

Cyclists have two registration choices for the Gran Fondo PEI event. The one-day option allows riders to select between the Gran or Medio Fondo ride, coupled with admission to the Gran Fondo Banquet on Aug. 24. For a more extensive experience, the three-day package includes three days of cycling, with the option to choose between Gran or Medio Fondo for the main Saturday ride. Additionally, participants will enjoy two guided group rides, post-ride lunches, entry to the banquet, and a coveted 2024 Gran Fondo PEI event Jersey.

But it’s not just about cycling. Amir highlights the event’s holistic approach, which includes partnerships with local businesses and food suppliers to offer participants a taste of PEI’s culinary delights.

“We try to showcase our natural offerings, for instance the banquet features fresh seafood,” Zuccolo says. “We will also provide options to accommodate all dietary needs, including vegan, vegetarian, gluten-free and allergy-sensitive options to make sure everyone is taken care of.”

Another one of the most striking aspects of the Gran Fondo PEI is its intimate nature. With a cap of 300 participants, it fosters a sense of community rarely found in larger gran fondo events and that makes a big difference.

“It’s a small group, so you really get to know a lot of people,” explains Amir. “There’s a lot of camaraderie that is built into it.”

The event’s appeal extends to all cycling enthusiasts with participants ranging from 16 to 80 years old. The Gran Fondo attracts a diverse crowd, from weekend warriors to seasoned cyclists.

“Most of our participants are in that late 40s up to early 70s age group,” says Amir. “But we welcome cyclists of all ages and skill levels.”

For many, the Gran Fondo isn’t just a one-day affair; it’s an opportunity to immerse oneself in the charms of PEI. And, it’s commonplace for participants to include the Gran Fondo as part of a larger vacation in the Maritimes.

“People usually add a week to 10 days to their trip to make the most of their island experience,” says Amir. “And there’s lots to do on the island, such as kayaking and different types of water sports.”

Zuccolo says many take time to explore the iconic Confederation Trail, a rail trail running from tip to tip on Prince Edward Island, or the relatively new Island Walk – a 700km route circumnavigating the island along trails, red dirt roads, AT paths and quiet secondary roads that is as popular amongst cyclists as it is amongst walking enthusiasts.

“A lot of people will do a cycle tour on trail or Island walk because you can hop off and do bed and breakfast as you go. It’s a different experience than the Fondo but in general cycle tourism is growing here.”

As the 11th edition of the Gran Fondo approaches, anticipation is high. With routes that promise to delight the senses and an atmosphere that fosters connection and camaraderie, it’s no wonder that cyclists from across Canada and beyond flock to PEI each year. So, whether you’re seeking a new challenge or simply yearning for a memorable cycling adventure, the PEI Gran Fondo awaits, promising an experience like no other.
